Pigmentation Protocol

Goal: Even Tone

A structured approach to addressing dark spots, uneven tone, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Last reviewed: March 2026 · Our methodology

Who This Is For

This protocol targets post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), mild sun damage spots, and general uneven skin tone. Deep melasma or hormonal pigmentation often requires professional management.

Core Protocol

☀️ AM Routine
1
Gentle cleanser
Fragrance-free, non-stripping
2
Vitamin C serum (10-15%)
Antioxidant protection and brightening
3
Moisturiser
Lightweight, hydrating
4
Sunscreen SPF 50+
Critical for pigmentation — UV undoes brightening work
🌙 PM Routine
1
Gentle cleanser
Double cleanse to remove sunscreen
2
Azelaic acid 10-15%
Tyrosinase inhibition and anti-inflammatory
3
Moisturiser
Barrier-supporting

Optional Upgrades

  • Retinol 0.3% — Add 2-3 nights per week (alternate with azelaic acid) after establishing tolerance
  • Niacinamide 4-5% — Can be layered AM or PM for additional tone-evening support
  • Alpha arbutin — A gentle alternative brightening agent if vitamin C is poorly tolerated

Realistic Timeline

Pigmentation is slow to change. Expect 8-16+ weeks for visible improvement. Some deeper pigmentation takes 6+ months. Sunscreen consistency is the single biggest factor in preventing new pigmentation and protecting the work your actives are doing.

Important
Sunscreen is not optional in a pigmentation protocol. Without consistent, adequate sun protection, brightening actives will have limited impact, and pigmentation may worsen.
