Barrier Repair Protocol

Goal: Barrier Health

Rebuild a compromised skin barrier with a minimal, gentle approach focused on ceramides and simplicity.

Last reviewed: March 2026 · Our methodology

Who This Is For

This protocol is for people experiencing signs of a damaged skin barrier: persistent dryness, tightness, stinging with products that did not previously sting, redness, and increased sensitivity. Common causes include over-exfoliation, too many actives, harsh products, and environmental stress.

Core Protocol

The key principle
Stop all actives. Simplify radically. Let your skin recover before reintroducing anything.
☀️ AM Routine
1
Water rinse or very gentle cleanser
No foaming, no fragrance
2
Ceramide-rich moisturiser
Look for ceramides, cholesterol, fatty acids
3
Sunscreen SPF 30+
Mineral/physical if skin is very reactive
🌙 PM Routine
1
Gentle cleanser
Cream or oil-based
2
Ceramide-rich moisturiser
Apply to slightly damp skin
3
Occlusive layer (optional)
Petrolatum or squalane to seal in moisture overnight

When to Reintroduce Actives

Wait until your skin no longer stings with basic products, feels comfortably hydrated, and redness has visibly calmed. This typically takes 2-6 weeks depending on the severity of the damage.

When reintroducing, add one product at a time, starting with the gentlest (niacinamide is a good first reintroduction). Wait 1-2 weeks between each new addition.

Common Mistakes

  • Reintroducing actives too soon because skin "feels better"
  • Using toner, exfoliants, or acids during the repair phase
  • Choosing moisturisers with fragrance or essential oils
  • Not giving the process enough time
